Literary Circles

Posted by Miss Berrisford on January 16, 2008

If you are in Years 7 and 8 you will have been taking part in Literary Circles in your English Library lessons.  These sessions allow you to work together reading and analysing some of the most brilliant books around at the moment.

Why not post a comment here?  Write a review of the book you finished last term, what was good about it?  Bad about it?  Would you reccommend it to other groups?  Why not write what you have discovered about your current book?  What new words you have discovered and what unexpected things have happened?

I’m reading The Outsiders and it’s a very interesting book. It’s about a story of the both sides that we all know exist: The rich kids and the low-class kids. In this book the low-class are called ‘The Greasers’ and the rich kids are called ‘The Socs’. I don’t know about the end but so far it’s not that bad!

I am reading the Outsiders and I really like it. Though sometimes I think it is a bit rambling. Sometimes I get a bit bored of the plot and just skip through some of the pages!!!!! And I hope that the book gets a little better because right now it’s not really a good book. I would recommend if you are a person who likes their books to be a bit violent. Thank you and come again!

The curious incident of the dog in the night time is about an autistic, teenaged kid that finds a dog with a garden fork in his nabourghs lawn. This book is funny, intresting and would probably inspire who ever reads it. christopher’s mother died of a heart attack, or so said his dad but after stumbling across a box of old letters all adressed to him, he uncovers a terribe secret.

I just finished reading the Outsiders and i think it’s soooooo good!!!!!!
When I came to the middle I didn’t want to put it down because it was BRILLIANT!
I love how the person who narrates the book keeps talking about how changes his feelings about being a Greaser and he doesm’t hate the Socs anymore. Even though the ending was a bit sad but still… Brilliant! I would DEFINETELY recommend this to any other who wants adventure and action in the same book. Like I said it was BRILLIANT!!!

I have finished the outsiders and towards the end it was really interesting!! I was a bit disapointed because 2 of my favorite characters died but i don’t mind!! There was even a barn that caught fire!!! I would recomend this to people who like there books to keep you reading, but you have to get past the beginning!!

    I finished the Outsiders.
The end is very sad, Johnny dies and then Dally gets an unloaded gun points itm the police and after that of course the police shoots him. In the very end though the ‘gang’ is alright, Ponyboy is back from the hospital and his brother Darry who used to be a big, mean guy turned out to be a very nice and kind person.
The book is very good, it’s full of excitment and action. I would recommend this book, and between 1-10 my number would be 9.

Well, now we finished reading the book called ‘Dear Olly’. I already read it so I already knew what was going to happen but I couldn’t tell anyone which was frustrating.
Anyway so it was about this girl called Olly (Short for Olivia?) who has a brother who has just gotten back his exam results which, by the way were straight A’s. So all of his family including Ollu thinks he’s going to be a vet like his mum and dead dad. But he wants to be a clown and go to Africa to entertain the poor orphans who has lost their family in a war. And Matt (who is Olly’s brother) is in an aciident because some idiot orphan goes adn tries to find his family even though they’re all dead. and he loses his right leg (I mean Matt) and then he has to go back to England and he can’t even visit the orphanage again.

The book we are currently reading in Literary Circles is “Angel” By Cliff Mcnish.
The plotline is about a girl called “Freya” and she lives with her brother “Luke” and father. When she was 8 years old, she saw an angel, after her vivid vision of the angel, she thought the angel would come back, so she waited for days, weeks and maybe months for the angel to come back but no sign of it returned.

An extract from the book- page 19-20

“Images of angels had dominated Freya’s hospital years, but nothing as terrifying as this. Aware of Vicky (her friend) holding her up , she seperated herself and glanced towards the roof again. The angel was still there, staring at her. It hadn’t moved.”

Do you think Freya is mad or are there really angels?

Our opinion- I think that there is angels because, of the hints in the book

    We recommend this book highly

    READ IT!

The book I have read is called dear Olly it is about a girl who is waiting for her brother to send her letters from Africa. Her brother wants to help poor children in an orphanage in Africa, then something bad happens to him and causes him to come back home. I personally so not recommend this book to anyone because it is to short and not much happens. Thanks for reading!

This book is called Dear Olly. It’s about a girl called olly waiting for her brother to send her a letter from Africa. Her brother went to Africa from England to help poor children in an orphanage. In his stay he went looking for a child who ran away and has an accident that causes him to loose his right leg, so he has to come back to England to fix it. I wouldn’t recommend this book because it didn’t have any action and it was too short.

    Book review: the devil’s breath

The devil’s breath is a story about a boy called Max Gordon. In the story his father disappears strangely. After fighting of an armed assassin he is determined to help find his father. He travels to Africa, where his father was last seen, and sets out into the Namibian desert. !Koga, his companion, is also his guide to the bush. Nearly as soon as they set out they are instantly tracked down by the person who possibly might of taken his father. Shaka Chang. This book is terribly slow moving and has little of the promised action.
    Rating:☺☺/☺☺☺☺☺- 2/5
